Asset Reliability Report MTW #331 Propel Pinion
Vibration
Analysis, one of a variety of techniques employed by CCI Pope, detected
a defect on an input pinion of a P&H 5700 shovel.
MTW Personnel were able to perform a planned changeout of the suspect
pinion. The changeout revealed the input pinion had one tooth
completely broken off and several other teeth were cracked, which would
also have broken off through further use.
A vibration survey conducted after the changeout confirmed that
vibrations relating to the defective gear had been eliminated.
